Mr N, a retired bomb disposal expert and a Falklands veteran was charged with several serious historic sexual offences dating back 50 years. The complainants in the case were family members.
It was alleged that Mr N had sexually abused them when they were younger and residing in the family home. All allegations were strenuously denied.
Given the complexities of the case, it sadly took 6 years to reach trial at Manchester Crown Court. And in preparation of the case, the defence team dedicated a considerable amount of time carefully considering voluminous phone records, naval records, hospital medical records, counselling and therapy notes, work related disciplinary records, court of protection proceedings documents amongst other official regulatory body records. These were collated and placed before the jury to show that the allegations were false and arose out of a family dispute over inheritance.
The jury unanimously acquitted the defendant of all the charges, and he was able to put these allegations behind him.
Barristers, Ms Sarah Elliot KC and Ms Erim Mustaq (both at Doughty Street Chambers), were instructed by Whiterose Blackmans Solicitors. Both are extremely experienced in such cases and are regularly instructed by our firm. Together, we have a high acquittal rate.
